"Legends and Tales" from Bret Harte. American author and poet (1836-1902).

To begin: the author's writing style includes unnecessary number of big words; I know a great many words, both new and archaic, and I pride myself on being able to contextually figure most unknown words out, but I STILL found myself looking at least one word up every three pages. Among those esoteric words were ones the kindle couldn't define because they weren't English, despite being used in otherwise-English sentences (I think most of them were Spanish, but wouldn't bet on it). There was also something difficult about the sentence structure, although I can't quite put it into words, and it might just have been a change in language over time issue (although I've read more than a few old books lately, and I've not had this problem before). The stories mostly take place in San Francisco/Southern California, and the ones that don't (the Ogress of Silver Land, for example) rely so heavily on what was going on in San Fran at the time of the book's writing that they made no sense at all. The Ogress was probably the worst, but I was actually enjoying The Devil and the Broker--until the final 'punchline' which I entirely failed to understand. Maybe it's one of those you've-got-to-be-from-San-Francisco things, I don't know.
Beyond that the tales were strongly Christian, frequently dealing with converting heathens and with people being Tempted by the Devil. The stories were also strongly racist, sometimes in the same breath as being Christian: "...arose adobe huts, whose mud-plastered and savage tenants partook regularly of the provisions, and occasionally of the Sacrament, of their pious hosts." (loc 13)
I'd say skip it, but maybe you like long words, backwards sentences, San Francisco, outdated political jokes, overt religious themes, and obsolete attitudes towards race, in which you might find this worth reading.
The tales included are:
The Legend of Monte Del Diablo
The Adventure of Padre Vincentio
The Legend of Devil's Point
The Devil and the Broker
The Ogress of Silver Land
The Ruins of San Francisco
A Night at Wingdam
